Dracula – Book Review

Around 130 years after it was conceptualised, Dracula is still not outdated! Dracula remains a masterpiece not only of the horror genre, but for all time! Recently, we had a new series of Dracula on Netflix.

Dracula was written by Bram Stoker. Stoker was a lawyer, a civil servant and worked as a theatrical manager as well. This book of published in 1897 and ever since then Dracula still rules the world of vampires and haunts the streets of darkness!

The story follows the experiences of five primary characters: Jonathan Harker, Arthur, Professor Van Helsing, Mina Harker and Lucy Westenra.

The story begins, when Jonathan Harker, a lawyer visits Transylvania to help Count Dracula with the purchase of a house in London, he makes horrifying discoveries about his client and his castle and he realises that he is now been trapped inside the castle.

Soon a number of horrifying incidents starts happening in England: an unmanned ship is wrecked at Whitby, strange puncture marks appear on a young woman’s neck, Soon, people came to know about the blood thirsty vampire. The streets of London were soaked in blood!

Jonathan, the professor, Mina & Arthur finds out a way to kill the vampire. Was the vampire actually killed? What do you think? Some people believe vampires are immortal!

It is an epistolary novel, that is, a story told as a series of diary entries and letters.

My favourite character in this book is Mina. She was very brave and a strong lady. I give this book a rating of 10/10.

Dracula gave birth to various new vampires’ movies. Although there have been numerous screen versions of Bram Stoker’s classic tale, none is more enduring than the 1931 original. The ominous portrayal of Count Dracula by Bela Lugosi. Another great actor was Sir Christopher Lee who played the role of Dracula in nearly 8 movies. Dracula remains a masterpiece not only of the horror genre, but for all time.

Today, you can visit the Bran Castle, in Romania which is now known as “Dracula’s Castle” because this castle exactly matches with the one described in the novel.
